Dementia Awareness Week 2015

Monday 18th May – Sunday 24th May is Dementia Awareness Week in the UK, sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Society.

Dementia is a collection of symptoms that are caused by damage to the brain and whilst it is widespread in people over 65, it can also affect younger people. In the UK, there are around 800,000 people with dementia and over 17,000 of these people are under 65. It is estimated that there are approximately 400,000 people living in the UK with dementia who do not know it. In fact, dementia is a growing problem and by 2040 the number of people with dementia is expected to double.

The symptoms of dementia include:

  • Memory Loss
  • Difficulty with planning and organising tasks
  • Being confused in unfamiliar environments
  • Difficulty finding the correct words
  • Changes in personality/mood.

Dementia Awareness Week is aimed at improving the general public’s knowledge and perception of dementia, whilst helping to raise money for research and education through fundraising activities.
